Every trip we sell puts money, traffic and attention somewhere. We take that seriously. Here is how we think about running a tour business that the places we love would actually want around.

How the principles show up in your itinerary.
None of this is virtue-signalling. These are the operating rules the specialists actually design against.
Hotels we actually know the owners of
We work with a short list of independently owned hotels and guesthouses. If a building was restored from a ruin, employs its cleaning team directly, or sources its linen from the village next door, that's the kind of hotel we recommend.
Guides who live there
Every guide on our roster is from the region they interpret. No roving tour leaders flown in for the season. It means better stories, more honest answers, and income that stays in the local economy.
Rail, road and ferry before flights
Where a train or boat gets you there in a civilised time, we route you over flying — the Venice–Florence–Rome triangle, Santorini to Crete by ferry, the Glasgow–Inverness sleeper. Shorter carbon footprint, often a better journey.
Off-peak by default
For the headline destinations — Amalfi, Santorini, Dubrovnik, Cinque Terre — we steer guests to April, May, September and October. Softer light, fewer queues, cooler walks, and communities that aren't overwhelmed.
Smaller cities as the anchor
We'll often build a trip around Lucca instead of Florence, Girona instead of Barcelona, Matera instead of just Puglia's headline towns. The experience is richer and the pressure on bucket-list sites eases.
No mass attractions without a reason
If we send you somewhere busy, it's because the experience there genuinely warrants it — and we'll time your visit carefully (early, late, or with after-hours access) so it isn't a scrum.
Giving Back
Quiet partnerships in the places we work.
We don't publish a percentage or run a "charitable booking" marketing campaign. We just commit to three causes we believe in and fund them steadily.

Restoration & preservation
A portion of every Italy booking is directed to frescoes-at-risk restoration in southern Tuscany, and to coastal path maintenance along the Cinque Terre.

Culinary schools
We contribute annually to two culinary schools training young chefs and hospitality staff in rural Sicily and the Peloponnese.

Artisan co-operatives
Ceramic studios in Sintra, weaving co-operatives in Alentejo, and a leather workshop in Florence that trains adults with learning disabilities — all on our supplier roster and all part of itineraries where it fits naturally.
Travelling With Us
A few simple asks of our guests.
The easiest, warmest trips we run are the ones where guests arrive with a bit of context. None of this is mandatory. All of it helps.

Respect the pace of where you're going — lunches are long, shops close at midday, villages rest on Sundays. That's a feature, not a bug.

Dress for the setting when visiting churches, monasteries and family homes — shoulders and knees covered; your guide will flag anything specific.

Tip locally and in cash. It matters more than you might think in the small businesses we work with.

Carry a reusable water bottle. Every hotel we use can refill it; we have not included single-use plastic water bottles in any itinerary since 2023.

Ask before you photograph people, especially children. Most will happily pose — but the asking is the point.
