Copenhagen announces itself along the water: the Øresund Bridge from Sweden, the harbour, and the copper spires of Christiansborg, the Exchange, and the Church of Our Saviour visible from the approach road. Your private driver meets you at Copenhagen Airport. Nyhavn in the afternoon: the 17th-century canal lined with coloured merchants' houses that is the most photographed scene in Denmark, where Hans Christian Andersen lived at numbers 18, 20, and 67 at various points in his career, and where the canal boats have been mooring since the harbour was dug in 1671. Palaces, the Little Mermaid, and the design museums.

Christiansborg Palace on the island of Slotsholmen: the seat of the Danish parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Ministry of State, built on the foundations of the original 1167 castle. The Great Hall contains the largest contemporary tapestry in the world — fifteen panels by Bjørn Nørgaard depicting ten centuries of Danish history, woven in 1990 to mark Queen Margrethe II's fiftieth birthday. Rosenborg Castle in the King's Garden: the Dutch Renaissance castle built by Christian IV in 1606 that houses the Danish crown jewels and the regalia collection in its treasury. North Zealand — Louisiana and Kronborg

The world's best modern art museum and Hamlet's castle.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art at Humlebæk, 35 kilometres north of Copenhagen: the museum whose permanent collection of 3,000 works includes Giacometti, Francis Bacon, Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and whose building — glass corridors connecting white pavilions that extend into a sculpture garden above the Øresund — is as important as the collection. The view from the garden terrace across the strait to the Swedish coast on a clear day. Kronborg Castle at Helsingør: the UNESCO World Heritage fortress built in the 1570s at the narrowest point of the Øresund, where every ship passing between the North Sea and the Baltic paid a toll for three centuries, and which Shakespeare chose as the setting for Hamlet without ever visiting Denmark. Aarhus is the capital of Jutland and Denmark's second city — a university town of 350,000 whose cultural confidence has been growing since the ARoS art museum opened in 2004. ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum: the eight-storey museum whose permanent collection covers Danish art from the Golden Age to the contemporary, and whose rooftop panoramic walkway — a 150-metre circular corridor of coloured glass by Olafur Eliasson called Your Rainbow Panorama — has become the most photographed piece of contemporary architecture in Denmark. Den Gamle By (The Old Town): the open-air museum that moved historic Danish buildings from across the country to create a living museum of three centuries of Danish urban life — the 16th-century half-timbered houses, the Victorian pharmacy, and the 1970s flat that are all curated with the obsessive attention to detail that makes it the finest museum of its kind in Scandinavia. Day 5

Jutland — Jelling and the Viking Heritage

The monuments that gave Denmark its name.

Jelling in central Jutland is where Denmark began: the UNESCO World Heritage site of two burial mounds, two runestones, and a stave church that represent the transition from Norse paganism to Christianity in the 10th century. The larger Jelling Stone — the 'birth certificate of Denmark' — was raised by Harald Bluetooth around 965 AD and bears the oldest known image of Christ in Scandinavia alongside the runes that record Harald's conversion of the Danes to Christianity. The Kongernes Jelling visitor centre beneath the church explains the archaeology with a thoroughness that does justice to the site's importance. Billund: the town that is the headquarters of the LEGO Group — the toy company founded in 1932 in a carpenter's workshop whose interlocking brick system has produced more individual pieces than any other manufactured object in history. LEGOLAND Billund is the original LEGOLAND park (1968), whose Miniland contains the most detailed model city in Europe.

Odense and Funen

Hans Christian Andersen's birthplace and the garden island.

Odense is the third-largest city in Denmark and the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, born here in 1805 in a house on Bangs Boder that is now the core of the Hans Christian Andersen Museum. The new museum building opened in 2021 — designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma as a landscape of flower-covered hills, tunnels, and reflecting pools that physically embodies the fairy-tale world — is the most ambitious museum project in Denmark in a generation. Andersen's fairy tales were not children's stories in the conventional sense: they were social criticism, autobiography, and religious meditation dressed as narrative, and the museum presents them accordingly. Funen is called the garden island of Denmark: the agricultural landscape between Jutland and Zealand whose manor houses, orchards, and market towns represent a pastoral quality distinct from both the urban density of Copenhagen and the open heath of Jutland. The drive back to Copenhagen crosses the Great Belt Bridge — the longest combined rail and road bridge in Europe at 18 kilometres.

Is Denmark worth visiting beyond Copenhagen?

Yes — the Louisiana Museum, Kronborg Castle, the ARoS rainbow walkway, the Jelling UNESCO monuments, and the Hans Christian Andersen Museum are all outside Copenhagen and all worth extended visits. The Great Belt Bridge crossing and the character difference between Jutland, Funen, and Zealand are part of what makes Denmark interesting.

What is smørrebrød?

The open sandwich that is the defining Danish food: a slice of dense rye bread topped with cold cuts, herring, egg, or cheese, assembled with a precision that the Danes have been applying since the 19th century. The traditional lunch is three or four pieces in sequence — fish first, then meat, then cheese. Torvehallerne in Copenhagen has the best versions available informally.
