Estonia is the northernmost and most digitally advanced of the Baltic States — the country that invented Skype, pioneered e-residency, and votes online — but its cultural DNA is medieval, forest-dwelling, and deeply connected to the land. Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe: a walled hilltop of Gothic spires, merchant houses, and cobblestoned lanes that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Lahemaa National Park, an hour east along the Baltic coast, is Estonia's largest protected area — a landscape of coastal manor houses, fishing villages, and vast raised bogs. Tartu, in the south, is Estonia's intellectual capital: a university town founded in the 17th century that combines 18th-century architecture with a young, progressive energy. This five-day private journey connects all three at a pace that lets each place register.

Day 1

Arrival in Tallinn

Medieval walls and Gothic spires.

Arrive at Tallinn Airport and transfer to your hotel in the Old Town. Tallinn's medieval centre is remarkably intact — the city walls, the Gothic town hall (the oldest in Northern Europe), the merchant houses along Viru Street, and the Toompea hill with its cathedral and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral are all within a compact walled area that can be absorbed on foot. Afternoon at leisure to begin exploring: the view from Kohtuotsa platform, the medieval apothecary (in continuous operation since 1422), and the first walk through the Lower Town's cobblestoned lanes. Welcome dinner at a restaurant that builds from Estonian traditions — black bread, smoked fish, wild game, and foraged herbs.

Day 2

Tallinn — Full Day

Kadriorg, Telliskivi, and the stories behind the stones.

A full day with a private guide. Morning: Toompea Hill with the Estonian Parliament in the Toompea Castle, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Dome Church, and the medieval lanes that connect the upper and lower towns. Walk through the Old Town to the Gothic Town Hall and the Town Hall Pharmacy — the oldest continuously operating pharmacy in Europe. After lunch, the city beyond the walls: Kadriorg — the baroque palace and park built by Peter the Great for his wife Catherine, now housing the KUMU art museum (the largest in the Baltics). End the day in Telliskivi Creative City — a former industrial quarter transformed into studios, galleries, cafés, and the weekend flea market that captures Tallinn's creative energy.

Day 3

Lahemaa National Park

Coastal manors, fishing villages, and raised bogs.

Drive east to Lahemaa — Estonia's largest national park and one of the first in the Soviet Union. The park's coastline is punctuated by four peninsulas, each with its own character. Visit Palmse Manor — a beautifully restored Baltic German estate that tells the story of the landed aristocracy that shaped Estonian rural life for centuries. Walk the Viru Bog trail — a boardwalk through a vast raised bog landscape of moss, pools, and stunted pines that is one of Estonia's most distinctive ecosystems. Visit the captain's villages of Käsmu and Altja — fishing settlements where the wooden houses, boatsheds, and stone fences preserve a way of life that predates the Soviet occupation. Return to Tallinn in the evening.

Day 4

Tartu

Estonia's intellectual capital.

Drive south to Tartu — a 2.5-hour journey through the Estonian countryside of forests, lakes, and farmland. Tartu is built around its university, founded by Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden in 1632, and the town has the energy of a place where ideas matter. Walk the Town Hall Square, visit the university's 18th-century main building and the cathedral ruins on Toomemägi hill, and explore the Estonian National Museum — a striking modern building that tells the story of the Estonian people from the Ice Age to independence. The Supilinn (Soup Town) neighbourhood, with its colourful wooden houses named after vegetables, is one of the most charming quarters in the Baltics. Farewell dinner at a Tartu restaurant.

Day 5

Departure

Homeward through the Estonian countryside.

Final morning in Tartu — a last coffee on Town Hall Square or a walk through the university quarter. Private transfer to Tallinn Airport (2.5 hours) or onward to Riga if continuing through the Baltics. The drive north passes through the Estonian lake district and the forests that cover half the country.
