Dublin is a Georgian city of considerable literary and architectural distinction, built in the 18th century by an Anglo-Irish aristocracy that left it the finest collection of brick townhouses outside London. Glendalough in the Wicklow Mountains is a monastic city founded in the 6th century in a glacial valley that was remote enough to preserve it. The Ring of Kerry is the most celebrated coastal drive in Ireland — an 179-kilometre circuit around the Iveragh Peninsula past Atlantic headlands, mountain lakes, and the offshore islands where monks lived in beehive stone cells a thousand years before the word 'tourism' existed. The Cliffs of Moher rise 214 metres from the Atlantic for eight kilometres and are the most visited natural sight in Ireland. Galway is the city where Ireland's west-coast character is most concentrated. Day 1

Arrival in Dublin

The Georgian capital of Irish letters.

Dublin is built on the River Liffey and announces itself in Georgian brick: the wide streets of Merrion Square and Fitzwilliam Square, the Custom House, the Four Courts, and the doorways — each painted a different colour — that have been the symbol of Dublin's domestic architecture since the 18th century. Your private driver meets you at Dublin Airport. The afternoon at leisure: the Trinity College cobbled square and the Long Room library, the Book of Kells, and the first pint of Guinness at a pub on Grafton Street or in the nearby Kehoe's — one of the Victorian-era pubs that preserves the snug layout and mahogany of the original. Welcome dinner at a restaurant that takes modern Irish cooking seriously: the wild Atlantic seafood, the Irish beef, and the increasingly excellent indigenous wine list that Irish sommeliers have been building over the past decade.

Day 2

Wicklow and Glendalough

The monastic city in the glacial valley.

The Wicklow Mountains begin twenty kilometres south of Dublin and rise to 925 metres — the largest continuous upland area in Ireland, largely covered in heather and blanket bog. Glendalough — the valley of two lakes — was founded as a monastic settlement by St Kevin in the 6th century, abandoned and raided by the Vikings, and eventually grew to a monastic city of several thousand people before its final destruction in 1398. The round tower and the cathedral survive intact; the stone churches and the monks' cells along the Upper Lake shore are some of the finest early Christian architecture in Ireland. Day 3

Cork: The Real Capital

The city that considers itself the true capital of Ireland.

Cork is built on islands in the River Lee and has a character — self-aware, argumentative, and proud of its food culture — that distinguishes it from Dublin in ways that every Cork person will explain at length. The English Market, a covered food market established in 1788 whose traders have been selling Cork specialities — tripe, drisheen (blood sausage), crubeens (pig's feet), and the local butter that Irish dairy makes differently from everywhere else — since the Georgian period. The Crawford Art Gallery, whose collection includes the finest group of Irish art outside Dublin. Blarney Castle and the Blarney Stone — which visitors kiss to gain the gift of eloquence, suspended upside down above a forty-metre drop — are thirty minutes from Cork: less than the mythology might suggest and more atmospheric than the cynical dismissal implies. The castle itself is a substantial 15th-century tower standing in mature woodland. Dinner in Cork at a restaurant in the English Market building or on one of the city's food streets.

Day 4

Ring of Kerry

The 179-kilometre drive around the most spectacular peninsula in Ireland.

The Ring of Kerry is the coastal circuit of the Iveragh Peninsula — the largest of Kerry's five peninsulas and the one that made the county's reputation. The drive anticlockwise from Killarney takes a full day and covers Atlantic headlands, mountain lakes, the Gap of Dunloe (a glacial pass through the MacGillycuddy's Reeks — the highest mountains in Ireland), and the town of Kenmare on the opposite shore. The Skellig Ring, the southern loop of the circuit, adds the Ballinskelligs Bay and the view of Skellig Michael — the sea rock seven miles offshore where Augustinian monks built a monastery in stone beehive cells between the 7th and 12th centuries, accessible by boat in summer and recognisable from its recent appearance in Star Wars. Day 5

The Dingle Peninsula and the Burren

The western end of Europe and the limestone plateau.

The Dingle Peninsula is narrower and wilder than the Ring of Kerry and receives fewer visitors. Slea Head at the western tip is one of the westernmost points of Europe — the Blasket Islands visible offshore, the last inhabited land before the Atlantic reaches Newfoundland. The Blasket Centre at Dunquin explains the community of Irish-speaking islanders who lived on Great Blasket until the last evacuation in 1953 and produced three writers — Tomás Ó Criomhthain, Peig Sayers, and Muiris Ó Súilleabháin — whose memoirs are among the most important documents of oral Gaelic culture. The beehive cells (clochán) in the hillside above Fahan: the dry-stone corbelled huts built by early Christian hermits, some dating to the 8th and 9th centuries, still standing without mortar. North through Tralee and into County Clare for the Burren — the limestone plateau whose 250 square kilometres of karst landscape supports Arctic, Alpine, and Mediterranean plant species in the same field. Day 6

Cliffs of Moher and Galway

The 214-metre cliff edge and the city where the west begins.

The Cliffs of Moher rise 214 metres from the Atlantic Ocean along eight kilometres of Clare coastline. The visitor centre is below the cliff edge; the coastal path runs above it and the wind determines how close to the edge you can stand. The morning walk along the cliff path from O'Brien's Tower north toward Hag's Head has the full Atlantic horizon — on a clear day the Aran Islands are visible in the bay and the mountains of Connemara rise beyond them. Galway by lunchtime: the city at the mouth of the Corrib River, whose medieval Latin Quarter and the Spanish Arch (the remnant of the 16th-century city wall through which Spanish ships unloaded their wine) give it a compact historic core surrounded by one of the most energetic pub cultures in Ireland. The Aran Islands are visible from the Galway waterfront on a clear day — the three limestone islands in Galway Bay whose stone walls, prehistoric forts, and Gaelic-speaking population make them the most concentrated expression of the Irish west.

Day 7

Departure from Galway

One last Irish morning.

Galway in the morning: Shop Street and the medieval Latin Quarter, where the buskers who have been playing since before the tourism arrived are still the soundtrack of the city; Eyre Square and the Kennedy Memorial Park. If time permits before the flight: the drive north through Connemara — the vast bogland landscape of the west coast, with the Twelve Bens mountains and the Atlantic inlets of Killary Harbour — for the specific quality of western Irish light that has been the subject of landscape painting for two centuries. Your private driver transfers you to Galway or Shannon Airport at the agreed time.

Irish weather is genuinely unpredictable — rain can occur any day of the year. The landscape looks magnificent in all conditions and waterproof layers are essential throughout.
The Skellig Michael boat trip is weather-dependent and operates June–August only — advance booking is essential and cancellations do occur.
The Ring of Kerry is driven anticlockwise to keep coaches on the inside of the road — your private driver will follow this convention.
May, June, and September offer the best balance of weather, daylight, and manageable visitor numbers at the major sites.

Is seven days enough for Ireland?

For the essential south and west circuit — Dublin, Kerry, Clare, and Galway — yes. Northern Ireland (the Giants Causeway, the Causeway Coast, Belfast) and the northwest (Donegal, Sligo, the Wild Atlantic Way north of Galway) require additional time. The Ancient Ireland itinerary at nine days includes the north.

How much driving is involved?

Approximately two to three hours per day, with stops. Ireland is not large but the roads outside the motorway network are narrow and scenic — and the scenery requires stopping. Your private driver handles all driving; your job is to watch out the window.
