Edinburgh is one of the finest capital cities in Europe — a medieval Old Town of closes and wynds built up the ridge from Holyrood to the Castle, and a Georgian New Town of grid streets and crescents that is the most coherent example of planned 18th-century city-building in the world. North of Edinburgh, the Highlands begin: the emptiest landscape in Western Europe, where the deer outnumber the people and the mountain light changes every twenty minutes. Loch Lomond, Glencoe, Rannoch Moor, Inverness, and Loch Ness are the set pieces of the Highland circuit. This seven-day private journey connects them in the sequence that makes most sense — Edinburgh south to north, through the Trossachs and Loch Lomond, across the Rannoch Moor to Glencoe, north along the Great Glen to Inverness and the Loch Ness shore.

Day 1

Arrival in Edinburgh

The medieval and Georgian city on the volcanic ridge.

Edinburgh is built on a series of volcanic ridges and the city's topography is inseparable from its character. The Castle sits on the plug of an extinct volcano at the top of the Royal Mile — the medieval street that runs from the Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of the monarch. The closes and wynds off the Royal Mile are the narrow passages between tenement buildings that housed the entire population of Edinburgh in medieval times — ten storeys high, one of the densest urban environments in pre-industrial Europe. Your private driver meets you at Edinburgh Airport. The afternoon at leisure: the Castle, the Royal Mile, and Grassmarket. Welcome dinner at a restaurant that takes Scottish produce seriously — Highland game, Aberdeen Angus beef, west-coast seafood, and the Scotch whisky list that any Edinburgh restaurant worth its salt maintains.

Day 2

Edinburgh in Depth

The Georgian New Town and the hidden medieval layers.

The Edinburgh that most visitors see is the surface: the Castle, the Mile, the Scott Monument. Your private guide takes you into the layers. The Palace of Holyroodhouse at the foot of the Mile is the oldest part of the royal complex — Mary Queen of Scots lived here from 1561 to 1567, and the supper room where her secretary David Rizzio was murdered in front of her is preserved exactly as it was. Arthur's Seat — the ancient volcano in Holyrood Park — rises 251 metres from the city centre and gives a view of the entire east coast of Scotland on a clear day. The Georgian New Town: the grid of streets laid out by James Craig from 1766, whose Charlotte Square, Heriot Row, and the principal streets represent the most coherent Georgian urban planning in the world. The Scottish National Gallery on the Mound houses the national art collection including the finest group of Old Masters in Scotland. Day 3

Stirling and Loch Lomond

The gateway castle and the first Highland loch.

Stirling stands at the narrowest point of the Forth Valley — every army that ever moved between the Scottish Lowlands and the Highlands passed through it. Stirling Castle is the most important fortress in Scottish history: the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, the residence of the Scottish court through most of the 15th and 16th centuries, and the site of the final confrontation between Scottish and English armies in 1651. The Wallace Monument on Abbey Craig — the sandstone tower built in 1869 to William Wallace, hero of Bannockburn and Braveheart — gives the full view of the Forth Valley and the line of Highland hills beyond. Loch Lomond begins forty minutes north of Stirling: 37 kilometres long and 8 kilometres wide, the largest freshwater loch in the British Isles by surface area, its southern shore parkland and its northern shore already in the Highlands. Day 4

Glencoe

The valley of the massacre and the most dramatic mountain scenery in Scotland.

Glencoe is the most dramatic valley in the Scottish Highlands — a glacial trough of 1,000-metre walls, the Three Sisters, and the open expanse of Rannoch Moor to the east. On 13 February 1692, thirty-eight members of the MacDonald clan were killed by Campbell soldiers who had been billeted with them for twelve days — the Glencoe Massacre, whose particular outrage was the violation of the Highland tradition of hospitality. The landscape holds the history: the valley floor walk along the River Coe, the visitor centre at the memorial, and the viewpoint of the Three Sisters against the sky. The West Highland Way passes through the valley floor. Fort William below Ben Nevis — the highest mountain in the British Isles at 1,345 metres — for lunch, then north along the Great Glen, the geological fault line that splits Scotland from southwest to northeast, and into Inverness by evening.

Day 5

Inverness and the Black Isle

The capital of the Highlands.

Inverness is the capital of the Scottish Highlands — a compact city on the River Ness whose castle (modern, Victorian, and primarily a courthouse) marks the point where the Caledonian Canal begins its run through the Great Glen to Fort William. The city's character is distinctly Highland: its accent is considered the purest form of spoken English in the British Isles, a legacy of its late adoption of the language after centuries of Scots Gaelic. Culloden Battlefield, east of Inverness: the site of the last pitched battle on British soil, fought on 16 April 1746, where the Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie was destroyed in forty-five minutes by the Duke of Cumberland's forces. The battlefield is preserved and the visitor centre provides the political context — the aftermath of Culloden was the destruction of the clan system that had defined Highland society for centuries. The Black Isle across the Kessock Bridge: dolphins in the Moray Firth, the Black Isle Brewery, and the atmospheric ruin of Fortrose Cathedral.

Day 6

Loch Ness

The deepest loch in Scotland and its most famous monster.

Loch Ness is 36 kilometres long, 2.7 kilometres wide, and at its deepest point 230 metres deep — it contains more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined. The first recorded sighting of the Loch Ness Monster was in 565 AD by St Columba; the modern mythology began with a photograph in 1933 that was subsequently exposed as a fake, but the tourist industry that grew from it is entirely real. Urquhart Castle — the ruined 13th-century fortress on a promontory above the loch, the most-photographed castle in the Scottish Highlands — was blown up by its own garrison in 1692 to prevent it falling to Jacobite forces. The drive along the southern shore of the loch on the B862 — narrower, quieter, and more dramatic than the main A82 — passes the Falls of Foyers and gives the best views of the water. Day 7

Departure from Inverness

One last Highland morning.

Inverness in the morning: the Victorian market, the River Ness walkway past the cathedral, and the dolphin viewing point at the Kessock Bridge where bottle-nosed dolphins feed in the channel year-round. If time permits before the flight: the drive east to the Cairngorms National Park — Britain's largest national park, covering 4,528 square kilometres of sub-Arctic plateau, ancient Caledonian pine forest, and the five highest mountains in Britain. Your private driver transfers you to Inverness Airport at the agreed time for flights south. Edinburgh Airport is two hours by road and can serve as the alternative departure point if required.

Good to Know

Scottish midges (Culicoides impunctatus) are tiny biting insects present in the Highlands from May to September, most active in calm weather at dusk. A head net and DEET-based repellent are strongly recommended for any Glencoe or lochside walking.
Scottish weather changes rapidly at altitude — the temperature in Glencoe can drop 15°C between the valley floor and the ridgeline. Layers and waterproofs are essential.
Edinburgh Festival (August) fills the city — accommodation books up 6–12 months ahead. The atmosphere is extraordinary but prices are significantly higher and reservations are essential.
Driving in the Highlands involves single-track roads with passing places — your driver is experienced with these and will navigate them correctly.

The Highlands and Skye tour (8 days) includes Skye; the Whisky and Castles tour (9 days) adds the Speyside trail and Aberdeenshire.

Is Scotland suitable to visit in winter?

Yes — the Highlands in winter are extraordinary. The light is low and dramatic, the crowds are absent, and snowfall on the mountains transforms Glencoe and the Cairngorms. Some attractions reduce hours December–February. The midges are gone. Roads occasionally close in severe weather — your driver will have contingency routes.
