Day 1

Zurich: The City on the Lake

Europe's most liveable city, with one of its best art museums.

Zurich sits at the northern tip of its lake with the Alps visible on clear days from the Lindenhügel hill, and its character is the productive contradiction of Swiss precision and a genuine cosmopolitan culture. Your private driver meets you at the airport. The Altstadt on both banks of the Limmat River contains the Grossmünster — the Romanesque twin-towered church from whose pulpit Zwingli launched the Swiss Reformation in 1519 — and the Fraumünster, whose five apse windows were designed by Marc Chagall in 1970 and are the most extraordinary stained glass in Switzerland. The Kunsthaus, recently expanded to become the largest art museum in Switzerland, holds one of the finest collections of Swiss and German Expressionism in the world alongside significant French Impressionist and contemporary works. The Bahnhofstrasse for the late afternoon: the most expensive retail street in the world and also the address of the chocolate and confectionery shops that give Swiss confectionery its reputation. Dinner at a restaurant by the lake or in the Niederdorf quarter, the old city's restaurant district.

Day 2

Lucerne: The Medieval Lakeside City

The Chapel Bridge, the Lion Monument, and the mountain above the city.

Lucerne is fifty minutes from Zurich by train and belongs to a completely different atmosphere: a medieval city on the western end of its lake, with the Alps reflected in the water and the Kapellbrücke — the Chapel Bridge, built in 1333 and the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe — its most photographed landmark. Your private driver delivers you to Lucerne. A private guide meets you for the old town: the Kapellbrücke and its 17th-century painted panels, the Water Tower beside it, the intact medieval city walls on the Musegg ridge above the old town with their nine towers still accessible by stairs. The Lion Monument — carved directly from the sandstone cliff face in 1820 to commemorate the Swiss Guards killed defending the Tuileries in 1792 — is the image that made Lucerne famous. Mark Twain called it the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world. The afternoon: the cable car or cogwheel railway to Mount Rigi or Pilatus, whose summits look down over the lake and the surrounding Alps. Return to Lucerne for the evening.

Day 3

Into the Bernese Oberland

The valley that leads to the highest railway in Europe.

The drive from Lucerne south to the Bernese Oberland takes an hour and crosses from the Swiss Mittelland plateau into the pre-Alps, with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau appearing ahead as the valley narrows. Interlaken sits between two lakes — the Thunersee and the Brienzersee — with the north face of the Eiger visible at the end of the Höheweg promenade. Your hotel is in Grindelwald, beneath the Eiger's north face, or in Wengen or Mürren — the car-free villages on the mountain terraces above the valley. The afternoon is for acclimatisation and orientation: a walk in the valley, the first views of the Eiger face and the Jungfrau massif, a cable car ride to get above the valley floor. The mountain light in the Bernese Oberland in the late afternoon — when the north face of the Eiger catches the last sun and the shadows extend across the valley — is the quality that made this the most painted and photographed mountain landscape in Europe for two hundred years.

Day 4

Jungfraujoch: Top of Europe

3,454 metres above sea level — the highest railway station in the world.

The Jungfraujoch railway took sixteen years to build, was completed in 1912, and remains the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 metres — a fact that requires stopping to consider, since the tunnel was bored through the Eiger and Mönch by hand between 1896 and 1912 with steam-powered drills. The journey up is part of the experience: the rack railway from Grindelwald or Kleine Scheidegg, the tunnel section where the train stops at the Eigerwand and Eismeer window stations to look out through holes in the Eiger's north face, and the emergence above the clouds into the Aletsch Glacier — the longest glacier in the Alps at 23 kilometres. At the summit: the Sphinx Observatory at 3,571 metres, the Snow Fun Park on the glacier, and a view on clear days that extends to the Black Forest in Germany and Mont Blanc in France. Day 5

Zermatt: Beneath the Matterhorn

The car-free village that has been looking up at the same peak for centuries.

Zermatt has been car-free since 1930. The village is accessible only by train from Täsch, and the result — combined with the Matterhorn's pyramidal silhouette above every roofline — gives Zermatt a quality of self-containment that distinguishes it from every other Swiss mountain resort. The transfer from Grindelwald by train and private transport takes approximately three hours via Brig. Arrival in Zermatt's pedestrian streets and your hotel, with the Matterhorn visible from the window if the afternoon is clear. The Matterhorn Museum in the village centre tells the story of Edward Whymper's first ascent in 1865 and the four deaths on the descent — the defining moment in the history of alpinism. Day 6

Zermatt: The Gornergrat and the Glacier

The mountain railway to the best view in the Alps.

The Gornergrat Bahn has been climbing from Zermatt to the Gornergrat at 3,089 metres since 1898, making it the highest open-air rack railway in Europe. The view from the Kulmhotel at the summit looks north to the Matterhorn, south to the Monte Rosa massif — whose Dufourspitze at 4,634 metres is the highest point in Switzerland — and west across the Gorner Glacier, the second-largest glacier complex in the Alps. Twenty-nine of Switzerland's eighty-two four-thousanders are visible from a single viewpoint. Your morning on the Gornergrat, with time to walk the ridge trails above the station. Geneva: Departure from the Lake

The cosmopolitan city at the end of the Alpine corridor.

Geneva is unlike any other Swiss city: it has been the seat of international institutions since the Red Cross was founded here in 1863, and its character is cosmopolitan and French-speaking, with the Jet d'Eau shooting water 140 metres above the lake as its most visible symbol. The morning at leisure in Geneva: the old town (Vieille-Ville) on the hill above the Rhône, with the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre whose tower Calvin preached from during the Reformation; the Promenade des Bastions with its colossal Reformation Wall. The Jungfraujoch is accessible year-round, but visibility varies — clear days reveal the full Aletsch Glacier view, while cloud cover can reduce visibility. Your specialist will monitor forecasts and adjust the day's schedule if needed.
Zermatt is car-free. Private vehicles travel to Täsch and guests take the Zermatt Shuttle train into the village. Luggage is transferred by electric vehicle. Your specialist arranges all connections.
The Matterhorn is rarely clear all day — mornings tend to be clearest before afternoon cloud builds. The Gornergrat morning visit is scheduled with this in mind.
Switzerland in December–March offers excellent winter scenery and skiing as add-ons; June–September gives the best conditions for all cable cars and mountain railways.

What happens if the Jungfraujoch is clouded over?

Cloud is the main variable on this itinerary. We always monitor forecasts and have alternative plans for cloudy days in each mountain area — a valley walk, a lower-elevation excursion, or a museum day. In many cases, being at altitude in cloud has its own atmosphere. If the weather is persistently poor, we can re-sequence the days to catch a better window.

Is Zermatt suitable for non-skiers in winter?

Absolutely. The cable cars and rack railways operate year-round, the Gorner Glacier view from the Gornergrat is arguably more dramatic with snow, and the village itself is extremely attractive in winter. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car (the highest in the Alps) gives year-round access to 3,883 metres.
