Private Athens Tours

Athens appears in 3 of our itineraries across Greece, ranging from 6–9 days. Every one is private, and every one can be reshaped around the time you want to spend here.

What a day in Athens looks like.

Taken from the itineraries themselves — these are real days from trips we run, not a generic description of the city.

Day 4 · Essence of Greece

Athens: The Acropolis & Its Museum

Your private guide — an archaeologist who has been working on Athenian sites for two decades — meets you after breakfast for the Acropolis before the heat and the tour groups arrive. The climb through the Propylaea gateway, past the elegant Temple of Athena Nike, to the first full view of the Parthenon is a moment that no amount of photographs fully prepares you for: forty-six outer columns of Pentelic marble, its apparently straight lines built with subtle curves that counteract the eye's natural distortions. Your guide explains the engineering, the politics, and what the building meant to the Athenians who built it with the treasury of the Delian League. The Erechtheion with its Porch of the Caryatids, the Theatre of Dionysus on the southern slope, and the panoramic view from the summit that takes in the ancient Agora, the city, and the sea beyond. Below the rock, the Acropolis Museum holds the original friezes and pediment sculptures in climate-controlled galleries, the Parthenon visible through the glass walls above. The afternoon is free to explore at leisure.

Day 2 · Best of Greece

Athens Highlights & Acropolis

Your archaeologist guide meets you after breakfast for the Acropolis before the heat and the tour groups arrive. The climb through the Propylaea gateway and the first full view of the Parthenon — forty-six outer columns of Pentelic marble, perfectly calibrated with subtle curves that counteract the eye's natural distortions. Your guide explains the history, the engineering, and what the building meant politically to the Athenians who built it with the treasury of the Delian League. The Erechtheion's Porch of the Caryatids, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Theatre of Dionysus, the Odeion of Herodes Atticus, and the view of the whole city from the summit. The Acropolis Museum at the base of the rock holds the original friezes and pediment sculptures in climate-controlled galleries, with the Parthenon visible through the glass walls. The afternoon is free: the ancient Agora, Hadrian's Library, the Byzantine churches of Plaka, or an optional excursion to Delphi — the oracle sanctuary in the mountains — can be arranged as a full-day trip if preferred.

  • Acropolis early morning with archaeologist guide
  • Parthenon, Erechtheion, Theatre of Dionysus
  • New Acropolis Museum — original friezes and sculptures

Day 2 · Greek Islands Discovery

Athens Highlights & the Acropolis

Your archaeologist guide meets you after breakfast for the Acropolis before the crowd and the heat arrive. The Propylaea gateway, the Parthenon — its optical illusions so refined that every apparently straight line is in fact subtly curved to counteract the eye's natural distortions — the Erechtheion with its Porch of the Caryatids, six female figures in marble bearing the weight of the roof with apparent ease. The view from the summit takes in the whole of modern Athens: the Theatre of Dionysus below, the Agora, and on clear days the sea at the Saronic Gulf. The Acropolis Museum at the base of the rock holds the original carvings in climate-controlled galleries — glass floors reveal the excavations below your feet. The afternoon is yours: the ancient Agora where Socrates argued, the Monastiraki flea market, or the neighbourhood of Koukaki for an afternoon coffee away from the tourist circuit.

  • Acropolis with archaeologist guide — Parthenon and Erechtheion
  • Acropolis Museum and original sculptures
  • Ancient Agora below the sacred rock
