Day 5 · Essence of Portugal

Porto Highlights

Your Porto guide — a native of the city who studied its architecture and history before becoming one of its best interpreters — meets you after breakfast for a walking tour of Porto's UNESCO World Heritage old town along the Douro. The morning begins at São Bento Station, whose entrance hall is lined with 20,000 azulejo tiles depicting Portuguese history in sweeping panoramic scenes — quite possibly the most beautiful train station in the world. From there the route winds past the Lello Bookshop, whose dramatic neo-gothic staircase and carved wooden galleries have made it the most famous bookshop in Portugal, through the Clérigos quarter and its baroque belltower to Porto Cathedral on its granite promontory where the whole copper-coloured city spreads below. A walk downhill through the medieval streets brings you to São Francisco Church, whose interior is so thick with gilt carving that the stone beneath has disappeared entirely. The afternoon is free to continue exploring — perhaps a port wine tasting at one of the historic lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, or a stroll through the Bolhão market.

Day 7 · North of Portugal

Douro Valley to Porto

After a final breakfast with the Douro below you, your private driver heads west toward Porto. The road follows the river as the terraced valley gradually gives way to the outskirts of the city, and by midday the granite skyline of Porto appears above the water — church towers, tiled facades, and the Dom Luís I Bridge arcing across the Douro in a single iron span. Check into your hotel in the historic centre, then join your guide for a welcome walking tour that begins at the Palácio da Bolsa and leads along the riverfront to the iconic bridge itself. In the afternoon, cross to Vila Nova de Gaia — technically a separate city, but spiritually inseparable from Porto — where the great port wine lodges have been ageing their barrels since the seventeenth century. A private tasting at a local winery works through the styles that made this river famous: the pale dry whites, the ruby, and the aged tawny that carries twenty years of the Douro in every glass.

Day 5 · Best of Portugal

Coimbra to Porto

After a final coffee in Coimbra — perhaps at the Café Santa Cruz, a former chapel whose vaulted ceiling and stained glass have been watching students come and go for five centuries — your private vehicle heads north. The A1 runs close to the coast here, and on clear days the Atlantic is visible between dunes and pine forest. Porto arrives as the road crosses the high-level Arrábida Bridge and the city's granite silhouette appears below: church towers, tiled facades, and the Dom Luís I bridge arcing across the Douro. Check into your hotel in the historic centre, then let Porto do what Porto does best: stand in front of some view — any view — and be astonished. The Ribeira waterfront, the bridge at sunset, the tiled alley at the end of the street that you didn't notice until you turned the corner. Tonight, the city is yours.

Day 8 · Spain & Portugal

Lisbon to Porto

A leisurely final morning in Lisbon — perhaps a last pastel de nata at a neighbourhood bakery, or a quiet stroll through the Príncipe Real gardens. Late morning, you'll board a comfortable express train for the three-hour journey north to Porto, watching the landscape shift from Lisbon's coastal sprawl to the green river valleys of central Portugal. Your private driver meets you at Porto's São Bento station — itself worth a pause, with its entrance hall clad in thousands of blue-and-white azulejo tiles. Check into your hotel near the Ribeira district, where the medieval buildings lean over the Douro and the iron lacework of the Dom Luís Bridge frames the sunset. The rest of the afternoon is yours to discover Porto's riverside terraces or simply sit with a glass of white port and watch the rabelo boats drift by.
