Day 3 · Sicily: Ancient Fire & Baroque Stone

Agrigento: The Valley of the Temples

The Valley of the Temples is one of the great archaeological sites on earth — a ridge outside the modern city where seven Greek Doric temples from the 5th century BC stand in varying states of preservation above the Sicilian plain, with the sea visible in the distance. The Temple of Concordia is among the best-preserved Greek temples anywhere, its columns still standing and roofed, converted to a church in the early Christian period which is precisely what saved it. Your private guide visits the site in the late afternoon when the heat is softer and the light is horizontal and golden — the stone turns amber, the shadows lengthen, and the site takes on the quality of a landscape painting. The visit includes the archaeological museum, where the reconstructed Telamon figure from the Temple of Zeus gives a sense of the scale of what was once here. Dinner in a restaurant above the valley where the temples are visible from the table, lit at night.

  • Temple of Concordia — the best-preserved Greek temple outside Greece
  • Valley of the Temples in the golden afternoon hour
  • Archaeological Museum — reconstructed Telamon figure

Day 3 · Essence of Sicily

Agrigento, Valley of the Temples & Scala dei Turchi

After breakfast and checkout, your private driver takes you south through the golden Sicilian interior to Agrigento. The morning centres on the Valley of the Temples — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where eight Greek temples stand on a ridge above the Mediterranean. The Temple of Concordia, remarkably intact after twenty-five centuries, is considered the best-preserved Greek temple in the world. Your guide brings the ancient colony of Akragas to life: the politics, the rituals, the sheer ambition of a city that rivalled Athens. After the temples, continue to the Scala dei Turchi — dramatic white chalk cliffs rising fifty metres from a turquoise sea, sculpted by wind and waves into something unearthly. Late afternoon, your driver continues east to Syracuse, where you check into your hotel on or near the island of Ortygia.

  • Scala dei Turchi white chalk cliffs

Day 6 · Best of Sicily

Agrigento to Taormina

After breakfast, your private driver takes you east across Sicily toward the Ionian coast — a drive of roughly three hours through the island's agricultural heartland, past pistachio groves, citrus orchards, and the occasional glimpse of Mount Etna's snow-capped summit growing larger on the horizon. Arrive in Taormina by early afternoon — a town perched on a cliff above the sea, with views so beautiful that writers from Goethe to D.H. Lawrence chose to live here. Check into your hotel and spend the afternoon getting your bearings: the main street of Corso Umberto I, the public gardens with their Mediterranean plants and sea views, or simply a table at a café in Piazza IX Aprile where the terrace hangs above the coast and Etna smokes quietly in the background.

  • Scenic drive across Sicily with Etna views
  • Afternoon arrival in clifftop Taormina
  • Corso Umberto I and Piazza IX Aprile at leisure
