Day 6 · Sicily: Ancient Fire & Baroque Stone

Taormina: The Grand Tourists' Favourite

Taormina was the most visited town in Sicily on the Grand Tour and the reason is immediately apparent: a Greek theatre cut into the cliffside above the Ionian Sea, with Etna visible above the stage and the coastline stretching in both directions. D.H. Lawrence wrote Sea and Sardinia here, Goethe described the view as the most beautiful on earth, and the paintings and photographs of this particular view form one of the most consistent obsessions in the history of travel imagery. Your private guide provides context beyond the aesthetics: the Greek political reason for building the theatre here in the 4th century BC, the Roman alterations for gladiatorial combat, the medieval conversion to defensive use. The afternoon is for the town itself — the Corso Umberto, the public garden planted by a Victorian Englishwoman in the 1880s, and the cable car down to the beach at Isola Bella for a late swim in the Ionian Sea.

Day 7 · Best of Sicily

Taormina Highlights

Your private guide meets you after breakfast for a walking tour of Taormina — a town that packs an extraordinary amount of beauty into a very small space. The morning centres on the Greco-Roman Theatre, one of the most dramatically sited ancient theatres in the world: the stage frames Mount Etna on one side and the Ionian Sea on the other, and on a clear day the combination is genuinely staggering. Your guide explains the theatre's Greek origins and Roman modifications before leading you through the winding lanes of the historic centre — medieval palaces, hidden courtyards, and the small piazzas where Taormina's social life plays out. The afternoon and evening are entirely free: descend to the beach at Isola Bella, a tiny island connected to the shore by a narrow sandbar, explore the boutiques along Corso Umberto, or find a restaurant where the seafood is as fresh as the view.

  • Greco-Roman Theatre with Etna and sea views
  • Walking tour of Taormina's historic lanes
  • Free afternoon: Isola Bella beach or Corso Umberto shopping

Day 5 · Essence of Sicily

Syracuse to Taormina

After breakfast and checkout, your private driver takes you north along the Ionian coast toward Taormina — a drive of roughly ninety minutes with Mount Etna growing larger at every turn. Arrive by late morning and check into your hotel, perched on the clifftop with views that stretch from the coast to the volcano's snow-capped summit. Your guide leads a walking tour through the historic centre: the elegant Corso Umberto I with its shops and cafés, the Piazza IX Aprile where the terrace hangs above the sea, and the crown jewel — the Greco-Roman Theatre, one of the most dramatically sited ancient theatres in the world, with Mount Etna framed perfectly by the ruined stage wall. The rest of the day is free to explore: descend to the beach at Isola Bella, browse the boutiques, or simply find a restaurant with a terrace and a view.

  • Coastal drive with Mount Etna views
  • Guided walking tour of Taormina's historic centre
  • Greco-Roman Theatre with Etna and sea panorama
