Day 3 · Essence of Norway

Oslo to Flåm — The Mountain Crossing

The Bergen Railway from Oslo to Myrdal is the highest mainline railway in northern Europe, crossing the Hardangervidda plateau at 1,237 metres above sea level — a sub-Arctic landscape of snow-covered fells, frozen lakes, and the Finse station where the exterior of the Hoth scenes in The Empire Strikes Back were filmed in 1979. The Flåm Railway branches off at Myrdal and descends 864 metres in 20 kilometres to the Aurlandsfjord — the steepest standard-gauge railway line in the world, passing through 20 tunnels and stopping at the Kjosfossen waterfall (93 metres, accessible from the train platform). Flåm village at the foot of the fjord: population 350, set at the innermost point of the Aurlandsfjord where the mountains rise immediately behind the village to 1,400 metres. The evening belongs to the fjord — the light changes through the valley from late afternoon to the late Nordic sunset.

  • Bergen Railway over the Hardangervidda plateau — 1,237 metres above sea level
  • Flåm Railway — the steepest standard-gauge railway in the world
  • Kjosfossen waterfall stop — 93 metres from the train platform

Day 3 · Norway Fjords and Northern Lights

The Flåm Railway

The Bergen Railway crosses the Hardangervidda plateau at 1,237 metres — a sub-Arctic landscape of snow-covered fells that in winter is impassable by road. At Myrdal the Flåm Railway branches off and descends 864 metres in 20 kilometres to sea level: the steepest standard-gauge railway in the world, passing through 20 tunnels and stopping at the Kjosfossen waterfall whose 93-metre drop is visible from the train platform. Flåm at the fjord: the village of 350 people at the innermost point of the Aurlandsfjord, where the mountains rise immediately to 1,400 metres behind the first houses and the fjord opens west toward the sea.

  • Bergen Railway over the Hardangervidda — Norway's sub-Arctic plateau
  • Flåm Railway — 864 metres descent in 20 kilometres
  • Kjosfossen waterfall — 93 metres from the train platform

Day 4 · Epic Norway

Nærøyfjord to Bergen

The Nærøyfjord cruise from Flåm: 250 metres wide, walls rising 1,700 metres, waterfalls falling directly into the water. Gudvangen, Stalheimskleiva, and the panoramic view above the fjord valley. Bergen by evening: the Hanseatic trading city of wooden wharves, the Bryggen quayside, and the fish market whose king crab and salmon have been drawing visitors since before the word tourism existed.

  • Nærøyfjord UNESCO cruise — 250 metres wide between 1,700-metre walls
  • Stalheimskleiva panoramic viewpoint
  • Bergen Bryggen — UNESCO Hanseatic wharf
