Day 6 · Best of Poland

Warsaw to Gdańsk

Morning transfer to Gdańsk — by express train (2.5 hours) or private vehicle through the Masuria lake district with a stop in Malbork. If you choose the road: Malbork Castle is the largest brick castle in the world, built by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century and UNESCO-listed since 1997. The fortress complex covers 21 hectares, with the High Castle, Middle Castle, and Lower Castle forming concentric rings of brick fortification that took 230 years to complete. Arrival in Gdańsk in the afternoon. The Long Market (Długi Targ) is one of Europe's most beautiful merchant streets — the painted facades of the Hanseatic trading houses, rebuilt after 1945, line the Royal Way from the Golden Gate to the Green Gate on the Motława River. Evening walk along the waterfront where the medieval cranes once loaded amber and grain onto Baltic trading ships.

  • Transfer north to Gdańsk
  • Optional Malbork Castle visit en route
  • Long Market and the Royal Way

Day 2 · Gdańsk & the Baltic Coast

Gdańsk: Old Town & Solidarity

Morning walking tour of the Old Town with a private historian: St. Mary's Church (the largest brick church in the world — climb the 400 steps to the tower for a panorama of the entire city), the Royal Chapel, the Great Armoury, and the Golden Gate. Then north to the Gdańsk Shipyard and the European Solidarity Centre — the rust-coloured museum built where Lech Wałęsa led the strikes of August 1980 that began the end of communism in Europe. The exhibition is one of the most powerful modern museum installations on the continent. Your guide lived through the period. Afternoon at leisure in the Old Town.

  • St. Mary's Church tower climb (400 steps)
  • Old Town historic walking tour
  • European Solidarity Centre

Day 12 · Epic Poland
