Day 3 · Best of Croatia

Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Southeast Europe, designated in 1949 and UNESCO World Heritage listed in 1979. The park consists of sixteen terraced lakes connected by waterfalls, boardwalks, and footpaths through beech and fir forest, in a Karst landscape where the limestone dissolved by the water is continuously redeposited as travertine barriers — the mechanism that created the waterfalls and is still building them. The colour of the water — cobalt blue in deep sections, emerald green in the shallows, transparent white in the falls — is the result of minerals, algae, and light, and it changes across the day and the season. Your private guide takes you through the park in the morning before the tour groups arrive. The upper and lower lakes circuit by boardwalk and boat, with the Veliki Slap waterfall at seventy-eight metres — the tallest in Croatia — as the centrepiece. Day 2 · Epic Croatia

Zagreb: The Museum City

Zagreb has a museum culture that is out of proportion to its size. The Museum of Broken Relationships — a permanent collection of objects donated by individuals after the end of a love affair, each accompanied by a handwritten description of its significance — has been exhibited in forty countries, and the Zagreb original is the one to see. The Mimara Museum holds one of the great Central European private art collections: Raphael, Rubens, Velázquez, and a sculpture collection that would be celebrated in any major city. The Archaeological Museum's prehistoric and Greek collection covers the territory that is now Croatia from the Bronze Age through the Roman period. Your private guide — a Zagreb art historian — helps you choose the combination that fits your interests. The city walks between museums — the Austro-Hungarian boulevards, the Secessionist facades, the Green Horseshoe parks of the Lower Town — are the connective tissue of a coherent city. Transfer south to Plitvice in the late afternoon.

Day 3 · Croatia & Istria

Pula: The Roman Southern Tip

Pula is at the southern tip of the Istrian peninsula and has been a significant port since the ancient world. The amphitheatre — the Arena di Pola — was built in the 1st century AD under Augustus and Vespasian, seats 23,000, and is in better condition than the Colosseum. In summer it is used for opera performances and film festivals; on an ordinary morning it is almost empty and entirely accessible. Your private guide takes you through the arena and through the rest of Pula's Roman core: the Temple of Augustus, the only fully intact Roman temple in the eastern Adriatic, still standing in its original orientation in the forum; the Arch of the Sergii, a triumphal arch from the 1st century BC in a street that the town has grown around; and the old town walls. Afternoon drive north to Plitvice via the coastal road and the Istrian wine country — the Teran red and the Malvazija white that are the peninsula's signature wines.
