Day 10 · Grand Tour of Switzerland

Geneva: The International City

The train from Lugano to Geneva takes three hours along the north shore of Lake Geneva — passing Lausanne (the Olympic capital, the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, and the lakefront at Ouchy), Vevey (Charlie Chaplin's home for the last twenty-five years of his life, and the Nestlé headquarters), and Montreux, where the Château de Chillon sits on its lake island unchanged since the 12th century. Geneva is the conclusion: the seat of the United Nations European headquarters, the International Red Cross, the World Trade Organization, and eighty other international bodies, in a French-speaking city on the lake. The old town (Vieille-Ville) on the hill above the Rhône, the Reformation Wall with its colossal carved figures of Calvin and Farel, and the Jet d'Eau — 500 litres per second shot 140 metres into the air above the lake. Dinner at a Geneva brasserie: the boîte de fromage, the lake fish perch fillets, the local Chasselas white wine.

  • Train along the Lake Geneva Riviera — Montreux and Château de Chillon
  • Geneva Vieille-Ville and the Reformation Wall
  • The Jet d'Eau at dusk

Day 8 · Best of Switzerland

Geneva: The Cosmopolitan Lake

The transfer from Ticino to Geneva takes three hours by train through the Simplon tunnel and along the north shore of Lake Geneva — passing Montreux (where the Château de Chillon sits on its lake island, unchanged since the 12th century) and Lausanne (the Olympic capital, whose Ouchy lakefront is the most beautiful waterfront in Switzerland). Geneva is the final city: the seat of the United Nations European headquarters, the Red Cross, and eighty other international organisations, with a French-speaking culture that makes it feel more Paris than Zurich. The old town (Vieille-Ville) on the hill above the Rhône, the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, the Reformation Wall with its enormous carved figures of Calvin and his contemporaries, the Jet d'Eau shooting water 140 metres above the lake. Dinner at a restaurant on the Rhône or the lakefront.

  • Train along the Lake Geneva shore — Montreux, Château de Chillon
  • Geneva Vieille-Ville and the Reformation Wall
  • The Jet d'Eau and the lake promenade

Day 7 · Essence of Switzerland

Geneva: Departure from the Lake

Geneva is unlike any other Swiss city: it has been the seat of international institutions since the Red Cross was founded here in 1863, and its character is cosmopolitan and French-speaking, with the Jet d'Eau shooting water 140 metres above the lake as its most visible symbol. The morning at leisure in Geneva: the old town (Vieille-Ville) on the hill above the Rhône, with the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre whose tower Calvin preached from during the Reformation; the Promenade des Bastions with its colossal Reformation Wall. The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire and the Patek Philippe Museum — the finest watchmaking collection in the world — for those with time before the flight. The flower clock at the Jardin Anglais and the final view of the Jet d'Eau from the quay. Your private driver transfers you to Geneva Airport at the agreed time.

  • Geneva Vieille-Ville and the Reformation Wall
  • The Jet d'Eau — 140 metres above the lake
  • Optional: Patek Philippe Museum — the finest watchmaking collection
